Toe to Toe With Life

I know it's been a while since my last post. I've had a lot going on over the last couple of months. Some of it good, some of it not so much. You have to take the good with the bad, I guess.

What I've learned is that life is a lot like a boxing match. Life is the toughest opponent you will ever face. You're gonna get knocked onto the mat from time to time, there's no avoiding it. But you've got to get back up. Don't just lay there.
I know, I've been knocked down more times than I can count. Each time it takes me a little bit longer to get up than the last. Believe me, there are times when I just want to lay there and quit. But I know that each time I go down and get back up, I end up a little stronger.
Now I'm at that point where I can get back up, but I'm barely strong enough to fight back. I'm just taking the punches, waiting for the bell to ring.
And that's okay too, just don't stay down. Keep getting back up, even if you only get in a light punch or two. I know it looks like there's no way you can possibly win the match. The opponent is a lot bigger than you. It's stronger, faster, and tougher.
It's not going be easy, but that's when you need to rely on God's strength. Let each of His lessons teach you something. Every time you hit that mat, you get back up, and learn from that mistake. Otherwise those same punches are going to be thrown, and you will fall into them every time. You keep God in your corner and there's no way you can lose.

For the LORD your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.

All Or Nothing

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
- 1 Corinthians 10:31

We are commanded to do everything we do, as working for the Lord (Colossians 3:23), but are we actually giving God 100 percent? Do we constantly seek His will, ask for guidance, and read our Bibles diligently? Speaking personally, I fall short of that command given in Colossians. Those questions have been on my mind a lot lately. Am I giving God my all?

Reportedly 77 percent of adults in the US claim to be Christians. That's over three quarters of the people in our country. The keyword there is "claim." We may say we are Christians, but our actions and our beliefs may say otherwise. For many of us Christianity can be defined as going to Church on Sundays, opening our Bibles once a week, and talking to God when we need something. But God asks so much more of us. He wants us to build a personal relationship with Him. He wants us to be a reflection of Him when we walk, when we eat, when we sleep, in everything we do. It is not enough to be a "Sunday Christian," we need to be an everyday Christian!

Imagine a man who is so full of the Holy Spirit, so in love with God, that even the most worldly people can see God through him. That's the kind of man I want to be! I am no longer satisfied with being the world's definition of Christian, I want to be God's definition. Who will stand with me? Who will give God everything they've got? God will not accept lukewarm Christians. He will spew them out. There is no room for them in the Kingdom of Heaven. That place belongs to those who give God 100 percent. So it's time to choose....All or Nothing?

The Consequences of Our Actions

Last week my family and I were driving along when we came across a horrific car accident. We had missed it by a couple of minutes. By the time we happened upon it several people were already there, helping out. We could only see one of the vehicles. The front of the SUV was a bunch of twisted, smoking metals. Inside was an elderly couple. The wife had to be Life-Flighted to the hospital, due to her injuries. We did not see the other vehicle, and to be honest, I'm glad we didn't. Turns out it was a young man, aged 20. Reportedly he had been driving at extreme speeds, lost control of his car, and crashed into the SUV. His car veered off into a ditch. He wasn't wearing his seat-belt.... He didn't survive. My heart goes out to his family, as well as the elderly couple.
It got me thinking about the consequences of our actions. This young man ignored the rules of the road. He passed by speed limit signs, opting instead to drive at a "fun" speed. Speed limit signs are placed there for safety reasons. He also chose not to put on his seat-belt. In the state of Maine you are required to wear a seat-belt while operating a vehicle, regardless of your age. He chose not to obey the law, which is there to protect us, and because of it he lost his life.

What about the consequences of not following God's Word? I'm reminded of the story of Jonah. Jonah was a prophet (please do not sing the song). He himself proclaimed the will of God. But when God told him to go to Ninevah, he refused. Jonah thought he knew better. So he hopped aboard a boat and tried to run from God. As a result he spent three days in the belly of a fish.

When we don't follow God, bad things can happen. We think we know what's best, but we don't. If we choose to ignore an authoritative figure, whether it be God or man, we will face major consequences. Sometimes what God says may not make sense at the time, but He knows what's best. Trust Him. He's got your back!

Object to Objectifying Women

It's everywhere, magazines, websites, television, all showing scantily clad women, put there to entice men. One cannot even go into a store without seeing it in the magazine rack at the checkout. We go online just to check our email or social media and get these pop-ups showing women, wearing barely anything, promising “pleasure” and “enjoyment.” We watch TV, maybe a clean family show, then the commercials come on for sunscreen, soap, or a new sports drink, featuring a woman, barely dressed, using the product. It is everywhere and there seems to be no escape. These companies figure that we men are more likely to buy whatever it is they're selling if they show these women in their ads, because it is what we want to see. And sadly they're not wrong.

This is not an easy topic to write about, especially as a guy. We are all guilty of the sin that is lust. I've done it, you've done it, even the "righteous" man at church, who claims to have never lusted, has done it.
We men are objectifying women. We treat them as nothing more than an award or a new car, something for us to look at and enjoy. We lust after them. Matthew 5:28 says "But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart." So when you lust after a woman you are committing adultery before God.
Women were created by God for a purpose just as we were. They are NOT inanimate objects, they are human beings, they are God's creation. So when we disrespect women, we are disrespecting God's creation, thereby disrespecting God.
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary describes respect as “a feeling or understanding that someone or something is important, serious, etc., and should be treated in an appropriate way.” We need to treat women appropriately and respectfully. “Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.” 1 Peter 3:7
In John Bunyan's book, The Pilgrim's Progress, a friend of Pilgrim's, Faithful, deals with lust. He talks of a man named Adam the First, who offered him his three daughters, “The Lust of the Flesh, the Lust of the Eyes, and the Pride of Life.” Faithful had considered taking the man up on his offer, but then he sees the words written upon the man's head, “Put off the old man with his deeds.” (Colossians 3:9) Faithful then tells Pilgrim, “Then it came burning hot into my mind, whatever he said, and however he flattered, when he got me home to his house, he would sell me for a slave. So I bid him forbear to talk, for I would not come near the door of his house.
This is what happens. When we give way to lust and greed it will take hold of us and will not let us go easily. We become a slave to it. We are to put off the old man and flee, run from it. Flee from lust and run to God.
So I challenge you as men of God to stop objectifying women and start giving them the love and respect they deserve. They are not trophies, they are humans and God loves them just as He loves us. When you see a woman immodestly dressed, whether it be in person, in a magazine, online, where
ever, turn your eyes and flee. It will not be easy. Ask God to help you. He will bless you for it. It's time we start respecting women. Who will it start with? Will it start with you? Object to objectifying women!

“Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body."

We of Little Faith

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
-Ephesians 2:8-9

I think it only fitting that my first post be about Faith. It's something that none of us come by easily. We all struggle with it. We are commanded to have faith over and over again in the Bible (Matthew 21:22, Hebrews 11:6, Mark 11:22-24), but yet, when things go wrong in our life, do we look to the One who controls all? Do we trust God no matter what happens? Do we give up everything to Him, knowing fully that He will work everything out according to His will?

Faith is something we must constantly work on. It is not something that just happens instantly. Having faith would be impossible without God's promises. Saint Augustine said "Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe."
Imagine for a moment if you gave up everything to God; if you just completely trusted Him and let go instead of trying to hold on yourself. Imagine if you were willing to let God do whatever He knows is best with your life. Now imagine the blessings! God fulfills His promises to us, we only need to have faith.
The problem is, we think we know what's best for ourselves. We try to fix things our way instead of God's. The truth of the matter is, we don't have any idea what's truly best for us...God does. He knows what's best. We can receive His best if we trust Him instead of fighting His will.

Things don't always go the way we plan in life. Believe me, I know. I've had my fair share of disappointments. Things have happened that I can't even begin to describe. My spiritual life was a complete mess not too long ago (it's still not perfect now). I was constantly depressed, angry, and feeling sorry for myself. It went on for a long time. I felt many times that God had forgotten me. I cried out to Him, screamed at Him, but could not hear any response. Finally one day, just as I was about to give up I heard God say, "Get up! Stop wallowing in self-pity. I am here." That could not have come at a better time. From that point on I have chosen to have faith. I choose to look for hope in every situation. I have been learning to completely surrender to His will. I'm not quite there yet, I'm not sure if I ever will be, but I will continue to trust my Creator no matter what happens in my life.

Does that mean bad things don't happen in my life? Does it mean I don't ever waver in my faith? Of course not. Things still go wrong. But instead of being full of resentment, I trust that God is going to work it out. I trust that He has a reason for what's happening. And when I do, I feel a peace wash over me that I can't even try explaining.

Trust God. Put your life in His hands, and see what He does with it.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.
-Proverbs 3:5-6
